Press Release:

"2011 Irrigation Tasmania Young Farmer of the Year" announced

After a hard fought day of competiton at Quercus Rural Youth Park, Michael Nichols, a member of the Sisters Creek Rural Youth Club and Farm Manager for Redbank Farming, took out the top spot.  Michael walked away with over $4,000 in cash and prizes after a busy day of competition.  Upon accepting the awards, he joked how this could be the easiest money he's ever made out of farming.

Rural Youth is not just an organisation for farmers and the Young Farmer competitors showcased the diversity of the organisation.  The Top 15 contestants included several full time farmers, but also in the mix are builders, members employed in agricultural services, one Ag Science University student, and a plumber.

Second place and over $3,000 in cash and prizes was awarded to Martin McConnon of Oatlands, who also featured highly placed in last year's competition.   Third place went to Ag Science student Victoria Percival, the only female competitor to make the top six in 2011.
